With all due respect to Richard Brandt for being the death defying guide to the inspiration of Birth of Ground.

We parked the little camper wagon at the furthest point of road access on a coast of lava flow that had swallowed farms and beaches for miles. We set out at sunset and arrived where the flow reached the sea well after dark. We thought it would be nice to brew a pot of Oolong tea between steaming fissures in the newly formed rock ledge we sat on just above an amazing spectacle. A mini volcanic cone had formed on the coast from the subterranean lava flow meeting the deep break. It was a primordial spectacle that left an indelible impression.
